What Is a Tooth Extraction?
A tooth extraction removes a tooth that can’t be saved through other treatments. Dr. Matouk always looks for ways to preserve your natural tooth first. When that isn’t possible, extraction protects your overall oral health. It also clears the way for restorative options like implants or bridges, if needed. Most extractions are completed in a single visit.
Simple Extractions vs. Surgical Extractions
Not every extraction requires the same approach.
-
Simple Extractions
A simple extraction removes a tooth that’s fully visible above the gumline. Dr. Matouk loosens the tooth and removes it in one straightforward step, usually under local anesthesia alone.
-
Surgical Extractions
A surgical extraction comes into play when a tooth is broken, impacted, or hasn’t fully come in yet. It might mean a small incision to reach the tooth safely, the kind of work Dr. Matouk’s surgical training prepared her for.
Reasons You Might Need an Extraction
A few problems tend to lead to an extraction:
- Decay that is too far gone for a filling or crown to fix
- Gum disease that’s loosened the tooth in its socket
- A fracture below the gumline
- Crowding that’s affecting your bite or orthodontic plan
- A tooth that didn’t hold up after a root canal
- An infection that antibiotics alone can’t handle
Sound familiar? An evaluation will tell you what’s next.
What to Expect During Your Visit
Your appointment starts with a review of your dental history and an exam of the tooth. Digital X-rays help confirm the position of the tooth and the root structure. First, we will give you a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort.
Dr. Matouk will then carefully remove the tooth with minimal disruption to the surrounding tissue. Before you leave, we will pack gauze into the socket to control bleeding and discuss post-operative care instructions with you.
Post-Extraction Healing
Following proper post-operative care instructions will allow you to heal quickly and comfortably. For 30-45 minutes, gently bite down on some gauze and replace when needed to help form a blood clot. Do not rinse, spit, or use straws for at least 24 hours. Stick to soft foods and try to avoid chewing near the extraction site. Take any prescribed medication exactly as directed. Contact our office if you notice worsening pain, swelling, or fever.
Why Choose Us for Your Tooth Extractions in Houston, TX
Extractions call for a steady hand and real surgical skill. Dr. Matouk received the AAOMS Dental Student Award in 2018, an honor given only to those who demonstrate exceptional talent in complex procedures.
That same surgical training carries over into the implant placements she performs regularly, giving her hands-on experience with the kind of careful, bone-conscious work extractions can require.
Losing a tooth often raises the next question right away: what happens after? Dr. Matouk addresses that during the same visit, rather than sending you home to figure it out on your own. Handling the extraction and the planning together means fewer separate appointments and a clearer path forward.
We accept all major PPO dental insurance plans and manage your claims on your behalf. Flexible financing through CareCredit is also available for patients paying out of pocket.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will my tooth extraction hurt?
Not really. We numb the area completely before we start, so you shouldn’t feel pain during the process. Some soreness afterward is normal, and over-the-counter medication usually handles it just fine.
How long does recovery take?
A few days, typically, before you’re feeling noticeably better. Complete healing takes longer, especially after a surgical extraction, sometimes several weeks.
Do I need to replace the tooth afterward?
Depends on where the tooth was and what you’re hoping for long-term. If replacement is what makes sense, we will walk through options such as implants or bridges with you.
What if I have a dental emergency involving a broken tooth?
Call us right away. Urgent cases get priority, and we’ll do everything we can to see you the same day if you’re in pain.
