Periodontal Care in Houston, TX

Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy smile. When that foundation is compromised, even the most well-cared-for teeth are at risk. At Matouk Family Dentistry, we provide expert periodontal care in Houston, TX, to stop gum disease in its tracks, protect your teeth, and preserve your long-term oral health.

Whether you’re noticing early warning signs or dealing with a more advanced case, Dr. Christina Matouk and her team have the clinical skill to help.

What Is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums and bone that surround and support your teeth. It develops when plaque and tartar build up along and below the gum line, leading to inflammation and, if untreated, progressive damage to the supporting structures of the teeth.

Gum disease is more prevalent than most people think. There are 2 stages of gum disease:

Gingivitis: This is the earliest stage of gum disease and is characterized by red, swollen, or bleeding gums. At this stage, the condition is reversible with proper care at the dentist’s office and home care.
Periodontitis: A more advanced stage of periodontal disease, where the infection has spread below the gum line and into the bone. If left untreated, this can lead to gum recession, deep pockets between the teeth and gums, tooth mobility and ultimately tooth loss.

Periodontal Services We Offer in Houston, TX

Our comprehensive periodontal services are designed to address infection and stop the progression of gum disease. Here’s what we offer:

Gum Disease Treatment

Not every case of gum disease requires the same level of intervention. At each visit, Dr. Matouk will check the health of your gums with clinical measurements and digital x-rays to assess the extent of infection and the depth of your gum pockets around each tooth.

If you are in the early stages of gum disease, a professional cleaning and improved home care may be all you need to bring your gum health back to normal. For more advanced cases, we create a treatment plan designed to address the source of infection and the body’s natural healing process.
We do not take a one-size-fits-all approach to gum disease treatment. Our team considers your overall health, the amount of bone loss (if any), your lifestyle, and your goals for your smile. Every recommendation we make is grounded in current dental research and delivered with the kind of precision you expect from a clinician who graduated at the top of her class from the University of Texas School of Dentistry.
Care continues beyond your appointment. Once the procedure is done, your dentist will walk you through everything you need to do at home to take care of your gums. You’ll also have follow-up visits to see how things are healing and make sure the infection is fully gone. Sticking to regular periodontal maintenance appointments after that makes a real difference in keeping gum disease from coming back.

Scaling and Root Planing (Deep Cleaning)

When gum disease advances beyond what a routine cleaning can manage, scaling and root planing, also known as deep cleaning, is a proven non-surgical treatment for periodontitis. It removes plaque and tartar from below the gumline and helps the gums heal, often reducing the need for more advanced surgical care later.
Scaling and root planing generally takes one or two appointments, depending on how many areas of the mouth need to be treated. A local anesthetic is used to numb the areas so you will not feel any pain during the procedure.

It’s normal to experience some sensitivity in the days following treatment, and this usually goes away within a week. After the deep cleaning, we’ll schedule a re-evaluation appointment to check the health of your gums.

For many patients, scaling and root planing is all that is needed to bring gum disease under control. For others, it serves as the first step in a more comprehensive care plan.

Symptoms of Periodontal Disease

Be aware of these typical signs of gum disease:

  • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
  • Consistent bad breath that doesn’t resolve with regular hygiene
  • Gums that are red or swollen
  • Loose or shifting teeth
  • Gum tissue that looks like it is pulling away from the teeth

If any of these seem familiar, don’t wait. The sooner periodontal disease is treated, the better your outcomes will be.

The Importance of Healthy Gums to Your Whole Body Health

Research has demonstrated a strong connection between gum disease and overall health issues like heart disease, diabetes, respiratory disease, and pregnancy complications.

Inflammation of the gums that lasts over time doesn’t just remain in the mouth; it can impact the rest of the body. Treating gum disease is not just about saving your teeth; it’s an investment you are making in your overall health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is scaling and root planing painful?

The procedure itself shouldn’t hurt. We will give you a local anesthetic to numb the area before we begin, so most patients experience little or no discomfort during treatment. This can cause some tenderness or sensitivity for a few days after treatment. However, it is usually temporary and easy to manage.

Can gum disease come back after treatment?

Yes, which is why ongoing care matters. Gum disease is a chronic disease, which means that the bacteria that cause gum disease are always in the mouth. After treatment, we usually recommend periodontal maintenance visits every 3-4 months rather than the standard 6-month cleaning schedule.

When does gum disease require surgery?

Surgery becomes a consideration when deep pockets remain after non-surgical treatment, or when bone loss is severe enough that more direct access is needed to clean the area properly. Dr. Matouk will always explore the most conservative, effective option first and discuss all of your choices with you before recommending any course of treatment.
