What Is an Implant-Supported Denture?
An implant-supported denture or implant overdenture is a removable denture that is supported by implants instead of sitting on your gums. In the majority of patients, two to four implants per arch are adequate, depending upon the type of attachment used and the amount of support desired.
This is different from a full arch restoration like All-on-4® or All-on-6, which is fixed in place and isn’t meant to come out. An implant-supported denture is still removable, so you take it out at night and for cleaning, but the implants keep it locked in securely while you’re wearing it. Which one makes more sense for you comes down to your goals, your budget, and your bone volume.
Benefits of Implant-Supported Dentures
Traditional dentures are held in place by suction and the shape of your gums. Over time, the fit of a denture can change as the jawbone and gum tissue change shape. An implant-supported denture solves many of the most common problems that patients experience:
- No More Slipping or Clicking: The denture locks onto implants, so it stays securely in place while you eat and talk, a big step up from a slipping denture.
- Less Reliance on Adhesive: Many patients drop the paste and glue altogether.
- Stronger Bite Force: You can chew more confidently than with a denture resting on gums alone.
- Slower Bone Loss: The implants stimulate your jawbone the way natural tooth roots do, which helps preserve its shape over time.
- Still Easy to Clean: Because it’s removable, you take it out and clean it the same way you’re used to.
Who Is the Right Candidate for Implant-Supported Dentures?
You might be a good candidate for implant-supported dentures if:
- You currently wear a denture that slips, clicks, or needs adhesive to stay in place
- You’re missing most or all of your teeth in an arch
- You want more stability and chewing power than a regular denture offers, without committing to a fully fixed restoration
- You have enough jawbone to support a smaller number of implants, or bone that can be built up with grafting
If you want a non-removable option instead, full arch restoration with All-on-4® or All-on-6 might be a better fit. Dr. Matouk will walk you through both after reviewing your imaging, so you’re choosing based on your mouth, not a guess.
The Implant-Supported Denture Procedure
It starts with a conversation about what’s bothering you with your current denture, or what you’re hoping for if this is your first one. From there, we take detailed images of your jawbone. This shows how much bone you have and where the implants should be placed.
Dr. Matouk places the implants, typically two to four per arch depending on your case. Healing time varies, but many patients wear a temporary denture during this period so they’re never without teeth.
Once the implants have fused with your jawbone through a process called osseointegration, we place the final abutments and fit your custom implant-supported denture. The end result is a denture custom-made to fit your bite and your mouth, designed to snap in securely with regular attachment maintenance to keep it that way.

Getting implant-supported dentures right isn’t just about placing implants. It’s about making sure the final denture fits your mouth, not a one-size-fits-all mold. We take impressions, bite measurements, and imaging seriously so your denture locks in securely and feels natural when you wear it.
We also don’t rush this process. Attachment type, implant spacing, and how the denture sits against your gums all affect comfort day to day. We walk you through each decision along the way, so you’re never left wondering what’s happening or why.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the implant-supported denture need any maintenance?
Yes, the small attachments inside the denture wear over time and are periodically replaced to keep the fit snug. We’ll let you know at checkups if it’s time.
Will people be able to tell I'm wearing a denture?
The denture is custom-shaded and shaped to look like natural teeth. Most patients find it looks and feels far more natural than a traditional denture.
Do I still need to remove it at night?
Yes. Unlike a fixed full arch restoration, an implant-supported denture is designed to come out for cleaning and, in most cases, overnight rest.
How long does the process take?
Timing varies based on healing and bone quality. We’ll walk you through a timeline specific to your case at your consultation.
